Piers plays Beethoven: Piano Concerto for Piano No. 5
with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra / Sir William Southgate, conductor

Programme:
BEETHOVEN: Leonore Overture No.1, Op. 138
BEETHOVEN: Concerto for Piano No. 5, Op.73, Eb Major "Emperor"
BEETHOVEN: Symphony No.7, Op. 92, A major

Sir William Southgate, soloist Piers Lane and the CSO provide a musical treat with a concert devoted to the genius of Beethoven. The programme is launched by the overture to his only opera, Fidelio, a still-relevant story of oppression, heroism and personal sacrifice. The majestic and evocative Fifth Piano Concerto (Emperor) and the extraordinary spontaneity and sheer inventiveness of the Seventh Symphony make this a night to remember.

Classical Expressions - Piers Lane

Programme:
John Field - Nocturne Nos 5, 10 and 11
Sciabin - 24 Préludes Op.11
Chopin - Complete Waltzes

Piers' programme for Expressions combines works by two closely - associated composers, Irishman John Field, and Fredrick Chopin. Chopin’s ever-popular Waltzes are an inspired evocation of a 19th century ballroom; Alexander Scriabin’s 24 Préludes, composed during his years as a young touring concert pianist, were inspired by Chopin’s compositions of the same time.

With Patricia Routledge as Dame Myra Hess
and Piers Lane on the piano

In an extraordinary musical and theatrical collaboration, actress Patricia Routledge and international concert pianist Piers Lane celebrate the life of Dame Myra Hess - a remarkable woman who initiated, directed and performed in a number of legendary concerts at the National Gallery during the Second World War. Her concerts provided a cultural oasis for thousands who remained in London during the war years. In Dame Myra’s own words (compiled by her great-nephew, composer Nigel Hess) with piano music by Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Schumann and Chopin, we hear how the ‘great adventure’ of these 1600 lunchtime concerts began, and how it continued while bombs rained down on London.
